It had first happened three days before. Kaylyn had felt this nagging sensation when she walked past the park, but she’d ignored it, because she couldn’t help thinking she knew what it was. The next day it was the same and she kept going, kept telling herself she didn’t want to go to the fae school, even if she did have magic, because going to the fae school meant dealing with the fae. After everything her parents had told her about their time at the school she was certain that she didn’t wan that. Yet, when she walked past on the third day she found herself stopping, wondering if things might have changed in the twenty years they’d been out of the school, because things could change a lot in twenty years.

Finally, even though she was sure she should have done, Kaylyn gave into the urge and walked through the gateway that led into the park. She wasn’t surprised when she came out in the middle of a car park, although the sound of a bell ringing to announce her arrival was unexpected. There was still this voice in the back of her head that told her she could turn back, save herself from what her parents had gone through, but she ignored it. Her decision was made. As she had the magic to be at the fae school she would take her place, because she wasn’t going to let fear of something that might happen change her mind, although she couldn’t help thinking that her parents would try to convince her to walk away if she went home.

“Good morning,” a voice said, making her jump. “My name is Petunia and I’m the head of the Human Student’s Department. If you’d like to follow me…”

“Kaylyn.”

“Well, then Kaylyn, I’ll take you to my office and we can have a little chat about the school.”

Nodding, Kaylyn followed Petunia, who led her into the building through one of the smaller doors at the side, and that was when Kaylyn started thinking she might have made a mistake. She could feel the magic that surrounded them, the same way she had been able to feel the door, but it wasn’t the same gentle nagging sensation she’d dealt with – instead it was as though the magic was pulling her in all directions, trying to tear her apart. All she could do was hope that they arrived at their destination quickly, before she passed out. It was just after she had that thought that a hand took hold of hers, which seemed to shield her from the worst of it, but it still seemed to take hours for them to reach Petunia’s office.

“What happened?” Petunia asked, as she gently pushed Kaylyn into the nearest seat, before pouring a glass of water and putting it in front of her.

“I could feel all the magic that surrounded us.” She shuddered, sipping the water in an attempt to calm down, because she could still feel the sensation. “When I found the door it was pulling me, but it was different, more gentle, and being here, with the amount of magic that must be in those walls, it was that times a hundred.”
