It is hard, the position that I’m in now, but at the same time he was right. We’re back on Avaera now, having chosen Gaelom as one of our worlds, and it’s where we have chosen to spend the majority of our time, because we feel safe here. Everyone knows what we are, so we don’t have to keep any secrets. The true Walkers of Gaelom are thankful for us doing what we did, as it means they have a spokesperson here, someone who’ll help our race to understand what they are, as there is a very big difference between the types of Walkers, but very few people understand that. Our race didn’t before we returned with a better understand of who we should trust.
A Council Walker is, generally, untrustworthy, although that does depend on the Walker. Some are more willing to keep secrets from the Council, and the fae, than others, as they have a better, but still flawed, understanding of the Web. True Walkers are often more trustworthy than natural Walkers, due to the connection they have with the worlds. Natural Walkers who are also true Walkers are very rare. I know of three, all of whom have chosen worlds that aren’t Gaelom, which is a choice I can understand. When you chose Gaelom you aren’t just choosing one world, a little like if you choose Kniroch – there are just many more worlds, and races, and problems to deal with on the Gaeloms.
We don’t travel much, unless we have to. The Council made the decision that we were better off here, so we work within the Council offices, and when we do go somewhere it’s often to one of the other Gaeloms. It’s a job we’re slowly starting to enjoy, although I know there are times when he wishes I’d made a different decision. He’d always enjoyed being able to travel the worlds freely, which was how he’d ended up on Avaera at such a bad time, so being trapped, as he puts it, on one world the majority of the time isn’t something he appreciates. Fortunately he’s not the sort of person to push too much.
Nothing I do really makes things easier for him. He gets why we’re on Avaera, he accepts that the job we’re doing here is very important, but he’s a natural nomad. Being tied to anything for any period of time makes him uncomfortable and that was why he suggested the Walkers. Of course he had no idea then how much they would appreciate having me in one place, because he truly believed that all Walkers walked the world, which just goes to show how little he really knew about anything. Now he’s learning things he never could have done before. Some days I think it’s the learning that stops him from hunting for a way to get himself out of me and I’m glad it does, as I know, from experience, that the ritual cannot be undone. Having him even more grumpy is the last thing I need.
