A woman, tears streaming down her cheeks, held a baby against her chest. Isibéal watched, knowing there was nothing she could do to help, because it was nothing more than a dream, and one she was almost certain she’d had before. Breathing deeply she lent against the wall to wait for the dream to end. She hated feeling useless, especially as the woman looked utterly devastated by something. The longer Isibéal watched the more she came to think that there was something very familiar about the woman, which could simply be due to her dreaming mind taking the face of someone she saw every day on the bus every day but never really paid attention to. The door opposite the woman opened and a man walked into the room. He looked calm, in comparison to the woman, but still unhappy. Isibéal watched as he strode across the room, wrapped his arms around the woman, and sighed.

“It’s the only option we have,” he said, barely loud enough for Isibéal to hear. “She’ll be safe on another world, with her protector, and she can carry on our blood line there.”

“I know, but…” The woman shook her head. “She’s our baby. We should be there to look after her, watch her grow into the beautiful woman she’s going to become, and we’re not, because we made a mistake.”

“Others are doing the same thing we are, love. It’s the best thing we can do for Isibéal.”

Hearing her name startled Isibéal, but she couldn’t believe that they were really talking about her. It was just a dream. Her name was in the dream because it was her dream. There was nothing more to it. Yet she still found herself getting closer to the couple, so she could see them and the baby properly.

“Are you sure I can’t go with her?”

The man shook his head. “It wouldn’t be safe for us.”

After wiping the tears off her cheek, which seemed utterly useless, the woman reached up and touched the man’s cheek. “We can trust the shifters?”

“I promise you that our daughter will be safe with the shifters.”

“Thank you.”

“Did you really think I’d do something if I wasn’t certain she’d be safe?”

“No, but…” The woman shook her head again. “I’m scared. She’s travelling to another world without us and I know that we’re…” There was a long silence. “We’re not going to survive this,” she finished finally, her voice so quiet Isibéal wouldn’t have been able to hear if she hadn’t moved.

As the man looked up his eyes met Isibéal’s and she was shocked to find that it was almost like looking in the mirror, because he had her eyes. It was almost as though he knew she was there, even though it was just a dream, which made her feel a little like she was eavesdropping on something she really shouldn’t be. Eventually, after what felt like hours, he dropped his gaze, but she couldn’t shake the feeling he knew she was there.
